With 2020 around the corner it is time to take a look at redistricting and see what is ahead. This briefing will cover three main topics—partisan gerrymandering, independent redistricting commissions, and the 2020 census.
In particular, we will review the following:
- With SCOTUS having found that partisan gerrymandering claims are not justiciable under federal law, a few states have struck down maps on state constitutional grounds. We will discuss what is the latest with these cases and how they will impact the 2020 cycle.
- Since the last redistricting cycle, a few states have introduced independent commissions to take over the redistricting process. Join us to find out the potential ramifications of that change in those states.
- While the citizenship question appears to have been resolved, at least for now, we will take a look at the latest developments as census data is the foundation for districting efforts.
